Thank You (A Tribute To My Mommy) | AWKWORD

I wrote and recorded “Thank You (A Tribute To My Mommy)” in honor of my perfect mother, who died 1/2/12, before she even reached 60. She was smiling and beautiful, even in her last moments.

I wrote this song sitting beside my mom, as she stared at death — with grace, as she did everything in her life. Without my mother, I wouldn’t be here today. And thanks to my mother, I never shied away from expressing myself through the arts. “Thank You” is the most personal song I’ve released to date, and for me it’s the most important … To me, this song demonstrates the positive power of Hip Hop — this is why I do what I do. Yet, I can’t help but think my tribute only barely touches the surface in capturing all that my mother means and has meant to the people in her life and the plants, animals and insects all around her. Mother, daughter, sister, social worker, chef, activist, intellectual, to the highest degree. The only person I’ve ever know who practices what she preaches, adheres always to morality, and even challenges my theory that there is no true form of altruism.

In her honor, as her son, as someone who always admired — and was often in awe of — her, I present this song to my family, friends and fans, as well as to all those who have ever lost someone (especially due to cancer and metastatic breast cancer) they love, undoubtedly too early.

I offer this song in the HIGHEST better-than-CD-quality sound, and I offer the option to download it FREE or pay whatever you can afford. And if you elect to contribute financially, please know that ALL (100% of the) proceeds will be donated to The Nature Conservancy in my mom’s name. And if you knew her, you know that this organization was more to her than a nonprofit to throw money at; my mom lived and breathed its mission to “protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people.”

March is… Remember My Mom Month (FREE AUDIO)

Today is March 1. March will, from now on, forever be known as Remember My Mom Month. Anyone who wants to remember his/her mother during this month is strongly encouraged; however, I, AWKWORD, ask my friends, family members and fans to help me honor my mommy (March 27, 1952 - January 2, 2012).

World-Famous Mother, Wife, Daughter, Sister, Social Worker, Chef, Singer, Swimmer, Activist, Artist, Gardener, Birder and Dog/Horse Whisperer, my mom died a few months shy of her 60th birthday, after living with breast cancer for 14 years. The nightmare began when I was a junior in high school and lasted through college, into the first year of my third decade.

The rest of my life is dedicated to her, and her causes (environmentalism, women’s rights, racial/economic equality & justice, etc.), and everything positive that I do — through music, or otherwise — is in her honor.

To commemorate Remember My Mom Month and help further spread the word about this incredible woman:

  1. I am offering my song “Thank You (A Tribute To My Mommy)” for free download for the entire month of March. [SEE BELOW for more.]
  2. Erica Fabrizio Photography is hosting a Photography Mini-Session on Saturday, March 24, in Ridgefield, Connecticut (where my mom lived — and saved hundreds of acres of open space and educated hundreds of kids about environmental issues), from which 40% of the proceeds will be donated to Friends of Breast Cancer ListServ, Inc., in my mom’s name. [SEE BELOW for more.]

(2) Erica Fabrizio Photography Mini-Session:

Ridgefield’s HamletHub:

Erica Fabrizio will be holding photography “mini-sessions” in Ballard Park. 40% of the day’s proceeds will be donated to Breast Cancer ListServ, Inc. Time slots are 30 minutes and can be scheduled from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Each session is $85.

On Saturday, a portion of the proceeds will be going towards Friends of Breast Cancer ListServ, Inc., in memory of Debora Mandelbaum. She was a long-time Ridgefielder who lost her 14-year battle with breast cancer in January. Two years prior to her passing the breast cancer had metastasized. This charity was a blog that helped her connect with other women fighting the same battle. Our donation will help keep the blog going so that other women can find hope and comfort that they are not alone, something that proved very helpful to Mrs. Mandelbaum!
